If R stands for radically different, then this is true in the Mercedes-Benz R-Class W251 series. Comfort and safety features of a van were elegantly implemented in the vehicle. Optionally fitted with four-wheel drive (4Matic) and Airmatic air suspension with level control, the models built during the period between 2005 and 2017 are also referred to as luxury coaches. Our Aerosus front air suspension shock fits the vehicle version with Airmatic, fitted with air suspension system on both axles. The air suspension shock absorber is a spare part of OEM quality. It is ready to install and is supplied with air spring, shock absorber and a solenoid valve with electromagnetic control. All components of our air-suspension struts are brand new high performance parts and fit on both the left and right sides of the front axle.
Special Tests for Special Requirements
Our air-suspension struts have to permanently withstand high operating pressure. Leakages can’t be tolerated. Expert controls in Germany ensure that leak and cycle tests are successfully passed. In addition, there is a special burst test for each air shock assembly. The burst test is a continuous load test that exposes the air springs used in the air-suspension strut to permanently high system air pressure. Only high-quality materials are used for the production of our Aerosus air-suspension struts. The air-spring bellow mainly consists of a special rubber compound, whilst the shock absorber is made of high-quality steel. Hence, the vehicles of the W251 R-Class are well prepared for long trips.
Where Can the Defects Be Found?
If the air spring leaks, the air suspension loses compressed air. The vehicle lowers on the front axle overnight and stands crooked or lowers from one side to the front. In the event of a leak, the compressor attempts to replace the escaping compressed air. This usually doesn’t happen. The compressor runs for too long, overheats or the integrated adsorption dryer passes through humid air due to overload. As a result, you must replace the compressor as well. Also, be aware of any display message that indicates "Airmatic error" and is an indication of system leakage.
When oil leaks from the shock absorber, you lose the good damping properties. The shock absorber loses oil if it is excessively worn. If you hear loud thumping noises while driving, you should always check your air-suspension strut and, in particular, the shock absorber.
Wear Does Not Spare the ADS
If you aren’t certain whether your Mercedes-Benz W251 has ADS (Adaptive Damping System), look in the cockpit for a switch that allows you to choose between the Comfort and Sport suspension settings. If you find this switch, your vehicle is fitted with ADS. Otherwise, you have an air suspension without ADS.
Always replace both air suspension shocks of an axle together. This is because wear never takes place on one axle side only. If you purchase our air-suspension struts, you get 10% discount on a pair purchase. Our two-year limited warranty and the 30-day money-back guarantee remain unaffected. If the air-spring bellow is the only defective part of the air-suspension strut, you can order and replace it separately. In contrast to the original part of Mercedes-Benz, it isn’t necessary to swap the entire air-suspension strut. The shock absorber can remain in the vehicle.
Stability, safety, first-class performance, and excellent ride comfort are just a few of the features provided by our OEM-quality Aerosus front air suspension shocks for the W251 R-Class.
